Political theory, war and peace, and postwar Japanese thought—this site introduces my research, teaching, and public-facing work, and gathers resources for students, colleagues, and anyone interested in the ethical and political challenges of building democracy after conflict.
About Naomi Ellis
I am a PhD candidate in Political Theory at UCLA, where I study how democratic ideals are reshaped by war, occupation, and postwar reconstruction. My research brings democratic theory into conversation with war and peace studies, with a particular focus on postwar Japanese political thought and its global entanglements. Across my work, I ask how institutions and citizens negotiate questions of responsibility, memory, and peace-building after large-scale violence. At UCLA I have taught courses in political theory, comparative politics, and ethics, and I am committed to classroom practices that foreground historical context, close reading, and inclusive discussion.
